Fish Alaska Magazine – Fly Fishing Resource

By | Fly Fishing Friends | No Comments

Fish Alaska magazine is a full-color glossy publication offering a variety of how-to fish articles, regional features, trip-planning advice, fly fishing gear reviews, recipes, entertaining stories, and useful state information. Our publication is operated by an Alaskan brother and sister team and has been in print for five years. The success of our magazine can be attributed to many things including the popularity of tourism in Alaska and its reputation for being the best premier fly fishing destination in the world. Fish Alaska readers range from diehard fishing and fly fishing enthusiasts to the men and women who love being in the outdoor Alaskan environment and fish casually. Families share the publication and for some it becomes a competition as to who can reach the mailbox the fastest to be the first to learn the latest fishing lowdown. Even those who do not fish enjoy the breathtaking photography, recipes, and special insight into the state which makes the magazine appealing for all. Fish Alaska attracts anglers represented from all around Alaska, every state in the “lower 48” as well as Hawaii, and internationally. For many with the intention to travel and the love of fly fishing, Alaska is on their list of “must go” destinations and the magazine is used as a resource for trip planning, gear tips, and fishing hot spots. For those living in Alaska and with easy access to premier fishing destinations, the magazine provides the knowledge an angler needs to truly experience fishing in this great state.

Far North Rod Smiths – Solitude Fly Reels Dealer

By | Fly Fishing Friends | No Comments

Solitude Fly Reels Dealer Chris Carlin of Bamboo Fly Rods – Far North Rodsmiths Bamboo fly rods and Alaska aren’t often mentioned together, yet its an excellent place to design, make and test bamboo rods. From high tundra dry fly fishing for tiny, acrobatic grayling to sight fishing sleek, multi-colored rainbow trout to playing massive salmon in fast moving rivers of deep glacial green, nearly the full scope of freshwater fishing – and even some saltwater – are never far away.  Rod tapers, construction methods, materials and components are tested and re-tested in every possible circumstance and condition in order to craft the finest bamboo rods available. I make each hexagonal and quadrate bamboo rod here in my shop in Alaska from beginning to end from choice Tonkin cane, select Portuguese cork, various exotic and local woods, top grade nickel silver, the finest gauge silk thread, and quality marine-grade varnishes. Culms are hand split, hand planed and milled to the tightest tolerances then assembled using time-tested adhesives, which results in blanks and rods that have no visible seams or glue lines and are straight, durable and responsive. Guide wraps are smooth, low profile and tight, ferrule fit is buttery, and grips are individually custom shaped for optimal fit and comfort. Varnish coating is functionally thin, glossy and perfectly smooth.  Rods that are hollow built are hollowed well into the tips when possible for optimal weight and action optimization. As a full-time bamboo rod maker, I enjoy making rods that I can tailor to the person that will be fishing them rather than making one standard aesthetic or color scheme, or limiting the taper choices to those that I may like best. Of course, I have my personal favorites that I’m always happy to recommend, but in the end the rod is…

The river drains out of Naknek lake, one of Alaska’s largest lakes, and into Bristol Bay. The Naknek starts at the outlet of the lake as a slow moving, deeper body of water from 6 to 10 feet deep. Approaching mid-river, it becomes more fast moving; it shallows and the bottom becomes gravelly with small pools throughout. In the rapids – just one half mile from your cabin – the river widens and shallows to 1 to 3 feet deep. As the channel braids, there are small islands to wade from for great fishing.
